Dry Needling is an advanced, effective technique performed by our highly trained physical therapists to rapidly relieve muscle pain, stiffness, and restricted movement caused by taut bands and muscle knots known as trigger points. At Dosher Physical Therapy, we offer this specialized service, often utilizing electrical stimulation (E-Stim) alongside the needles for enhanced therapeutic benefits.
Dry Needling targets the root source of many chronic pain complaints, helping patients with conditions ranging from Sciatica to TMJ Management to achieve faster, more lasting relief than traditional manual therapy alone.
What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling involves the insertion of a fine, sterile filament needle (similar to an acupuncture needle, but distinct in its therapeutic purpose) directly into a trigger point within a muscle. This process is called a “dry” technique because it does not involve injecting any substance.
When the needle enters the trigger point, it often elicits a brief, involuntary muscle contraction called a Local Twitch Response (LTR). This LTR is critical as it:
- Releases the Trigger Point: The twitch helps to “reset” the abnormal electrical and chemical activity in the taut muscle band.
- Improves Blood Flow: It floods the area with fresh, oxygenated blood, washing out the irritating chemicals that caused the pain.
- Reduces Pain: It stimulates nerve fibers that block pain signals, providing immediate relief.
Dry Needling with Electrical Stimulation (E-Stim)
For amplified and deeper therapeutic effects, the therapist may attach small electrodes to the handles of the inserted needles and apply a very low-level electrical current. This technique:
- Deepens Muscle Relaxation: The E-Stim promotes a rhythmic, pulsing contraction and relaxation of the muscle, similar to a localized, internal massage.
- Provides Prolonged Pain Relief: The electrical current helps prolong the pain-blocking signals from the nervous system.
- Accelerates Healing: It encourages the body’s natural release of pain-fighting endorphins, making it highly effective for Chronic Pain Management.
Who Can Benefit from Dry Needling?
Dry Needling is highly beneficial for nearly any condition involving muscle knots, tightness, or pain. It is an excellent complement to movement-based therapies for conditions such as:
- Chronic Neck and Back Pain: Particularly for deep Muscle Spasms and trigger points associated with Lumbago, Stenosis, or Herniated Discs.
- Headaches and TMJ Pain: Targeting the sub-occipital, jaw, and shoulder muscles often responsible for tension headaches.
- Tendonitis and Joint Pain: Used to treat muscular tension contributing to conditions like Tennis Elbow or Plantar Fasciitis.
- Sciatica and Radiculopathy: Relieving piriformis muscle tension that can irritate the sciatic nerve.
- Athletic Performance and Recovery: Quickly releasing tight muscles to restore range of motion and prevent injury.
Safety and Certification
Safety is our top priority. Our dry needling practitioners are board-certified physical therapists who have completed extensive post-graduate training and credentialing in this specialized technique, ensuring the highest standards of safety and care.

Additional Resources and Services
Dry Needling works optimally when integrated with other functional therapies:
- Manual Therapy: Dry Needling often precedes hands-on soft tissue work for enhanced effectiveness.
- Stretching Programs: Used to lengthen muscles after trigger points have been released.
- Cupping Therapy: A complementary technique for releasing broad areas of myofascial tension.
