Suffering from muscle pain, limited movement, or other persistent discomfort? You do not have to rely on medications with adverse side effects to find relief. At Dosher Physical Therapy, we offer advanced, evidence-based treatments to help you overcome musculoskeletal dysfunction.
Dry needling is a safe, drug-free way to treat pain and restore mobility. This highly effective manual therapy technique is designed to target deep muscular tension, helping you regain your comfort and get back to the activities you love.
What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is an advanced therapeutic technique used by specially trained physical therapists to treat myofascial pain. The process involves inserting a very fine, sterile, solid filament needle (meaning no medication is injected, hence the term “dry”) directly into myofascial trigger points—commonly known as muscle “knots.”
When these trigger points develop, they can cause localized pain, restrict your range of motion, and refer pain to other parts of your body. The precise insertion of the needle helps to mechanically disrupt the contracted muscle fibers, stimulating a local twitch response. This reaction effectively “resets” the muscle, restoring normal blood flow, flushing out inflammatory chemicals, and providing rapid relief from muscle pain and trigger points.
To further enhance your recovery, we offer treatment with and without Electrical Stimulation (E-Stim). Pairing dry needling with E-stim can provide a deeper relaxation response for severe or chronic muscle spasms.
Conditions We Treat with Dry Needling
Because it directly addresses the muscular root of pain, dry needling is incredibly versatile. This safe and effective treatment is used to alleviate a wide range of conditions, including neck and back pain, chronic headaches, tendinitis, and muscle spasms.
Our expert physical therapists also successfully utilize dry needling as an effective and non-invasive treatment for TMJ (TMJD) to release tight jaw muscles. Furthermore, it is a highly beneficial component of comprehensive therapy programs for individuals suffering from chronic pain.
What to Expect During Your Session
It is completely normal to be a little apprehensive if you have never experienced dry needling before. Our physical therapists are highly trained and prioritize your comfort and safety at all times.
1. A Thorough Assessment: Before any needling occurs, your therapist will conduct a detailed physical evaluation to identify the exact trigger points and muscular restrictions contributing to your pain.
2. The Needling Process: The needles used are incredibly thin—much finer than those used for injections or drawing blood. You may feel a slight prick as the needle passes through the skin, followed by a deep cramping or “twitching” sensation when it reaches the trigger point. This twitch is a positive sign that the muscle is releasing.
3. Post-Treatment Care: You may experience some mild muscle soreness after the session, similar to how you might feel after a rigorous workout or deep tissue massage. This typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours, leaving you with significantly improved mobility and reduced pain.
Note: Dry needling is rarely a standalone treatment. It is most effective when combined with personalized therapeutic exercises, stretching, and other manual therapies to address the underlying biomechanical causes of your muscle tightness.
